2.0 HDi turning, not starting, not connecting to OBDII

Hi everyone
recently acquired a 2005 2.0HDi.
It was never a great starter and generally needed quite a long crank before it would run.
I recently swapped out the battery for a newer, but not brand new, AGM type. It seeed a bit happier on that, but I only did a couple of journeys before things went downhill (and I've no reason to believe the change of battery is related to the faults).

After the car sat unused for about a week, I tried to start it and it turned over pretty happily, but simply did not fire. I hooked up some jump leads to another vehicle to make certain it wasn't a low voltage, as expected no change. Tried the primer bulb, no effect. Have had a cursory check for belts and electrical connections, nothing out of place.

I've now bought a cheap OBDII reader and it will power up from the Berlingo but not link properly to get codes. The reader works perfectly in my wife's car.

Google has led me to believe that my non-starting could be something to do with corrosion in the ECU, amongst many other possibilities. Maybe that would also prevent the OBDII reader from connecting properly?

Any other suggestions on how to proceed? I'm not massively experienced but would like to explore the more obvious things before giving up and calling up the garage- especially since I can't actually drive the car there!

Thanks Smile
